What Makes News
News is what is happening around us in the world. It can be anything from a big disaster to an important event. It can be a political scandal or a personal story.
Famous people: All societies are interested in the lives of famous men and women, especially if they fall from power or lose their money. It is also important to know how much celebrities earn, what they do and how they look.
Health: Most people are concerned about their health and so they will be interested in stories about traditional remedies, medical research, diseases, hospitals and clinics. Drugs, diet and exercise are also important topics.
Sex: All societies are interested in sex, and so there are many news stories about sexual activity, including what is considered acceptable or not. However, it is important to remember that the way sex is discussed in different societies is different.
Crime: Any crime is newsworthy, but more serious crimes or unusual crimes will attract more attention. Road traffic offences, break and enters, forgery, rape and murder are examples of crimes that will make news.
Money: Any money is a story, but so too are school fees, taxes, the Budget, food prices and wage rises. It is also important to remember that it is not only large sums of money which make news; a little girl who gives her only ten cents to a huge fund-raising event can be just as interesting as the businessman who gave $100.
