What Is Fashion?
Fashion is the way in which people express themselves through the clothes that they wear. It can also include the style of hair, makeup and accessories. Fashion is constantly changing, and trends emerge from a variety of factors. These factors can be cultural, economic or political, and often combine to influence the fashion industry as a whole.
For example, a famous band or singer can start a trend by wearing certain clothing items or styles of dressing. People can follow this trend by purchasing the same items as their favorite celebrity, or they can choose to develop a style that is unique to them. In either case, fashion can be a great way to express oneself and build confidence in the person who is wearing the clothes.
Clothes can also be used for identification or tradition: judges wear robes, members of the military wear uniforms, and brides traditionally wear white dresses. Some people enjoy the challenge of developing a distinct style, and this can be a very satisfying endeavor, especially when it is achieved without spending a fortune.
However, some people feel that the fast-paced changes in fashion are excessive and wasteful, encouraging consumption for its own sake. This can be a valid concern, but many people also appreciate the diversity that different trends offer and enjoy being exposed to a wide range of options. Furthermore, the fact that styles can cyclically come back into “fashion” suggests that there is always demand for new clothing options.
