What is Entertaiment?
Entertaiment is a word that has become associated with amusement, and in its most general form, it refers to any event or activity designed to please and delight the audience. However, entertainment is also found to have a more serious meaning such as in ceremonies, celebrations, religious festivals, and even satire.
The suffix -ment is a common one in English that forms nouns from verb stems (as in amazement, betterment, merriment). It replaced the Latin -mentum in Old French. The e- is often added to the suffix for French nouns formed from stems ending in r (as in entretenir from entre- “among” + tenir “to hold”), but for English verb stems in -er and -ir, the -e- is dropped.
It is interesting that a lot of entertainment tends to focus on social backstabbing and murders which is an area that the brain was evolved to deeply respond to in order to function in the world. This may have to do with entertainment triggering the brain to release seratonin and other chemicals.
