How to Play Poker in Position

Getting to know your opponents is key to winning poker hands. Playing in position — meaning that you act after your opponents have made their decisions — gives you key insights into the strength of their hands. You can also see how they react to the flop, turn, and river. This can help you avoid calling with weak hands and bluffing in situations where the chances of making a good hand are low.
Each round of betting is initiated by a player making a bet, or putting chips into the pot. Other players may call (put in the same amount as the bet), raise, or fold their cards. The first to call the bet wins the hand.
When all of the cards have been revealed, the third round of betting is called the “turn.” In this round, a fourth community card is dealt face up on the table. This card can change the course of your hand.
In the final betting round, called the “river,” the fifth and last community card is revealed. This can change the strength of your hand and force you to either fold or risk losing more money. A full house consists of three of a kind and a pair. If two or more players have a full house, the highest three of a kind wins.
